The Balches of Somersetshire were gentry and yeoman farmers, the sort of people who became Puritans. One of George's line served as mayor of his town. They proved during a 17th century visitation that they were entitled to bear a coat of arms. Another testament to their stature is that, in addition to being sometimes clergy who held seats, they often were called upon to be on boards that oversaw the schools.
