About George Dowson

They were living at 65 Woodhull Avenue Bradford at the time of Kathleen’s birth. In England he was a cabinetmaker as well as an undertaker. Profession: Master Joiner. Helped lay the floor of the Cartwright Memorial Hall in Maningham Park Bradford. He emigrated to South Africa in 1910 from Southampton aboard the ship “Saxon” destined for Durban, followed in 1911 by Edith & her two children Harry aged 3 & Kathleen aged 1 from Southampton on the “Dover Castle” bound for Cape Town. He initially started work and lived on the Bantjes mine Florida in the Reduction Plant; he also worked at the Village Deep mine, Johannesburg. He later started his own construction company and did contract work for the mines. Built a lovely big house at 33, 6th Avenue Florida where they lived until about 1942, and a second house. Their children attended the Florida Primary School which opened in 1911 and was within walking distance of their house; and then the Krugersdorp High School by train from the Florida station, which was a block away. They owned a Peerless car that could seat 12 people. (A classic in its time). He spent long periods of time away from home in Northern Rhodesia where he worked at the Nkana mine, Ndola, and was part of the original team that started the mine. We have a photograph showing a family visit to his camp there. He suffered a stroke around 1943, which left him paralysed for 8 years and was unable to speak or walk. He & Elsie went to live at 28, 3rd Avenue, with Amy Orford, James & Kathleen. Elsie & Kathleen looked after him until he died. Carole was 6 yrs.
