TIMELINE: --------- 1759 - Jan 28, York, York Co. PA Georg Ludwig Infeld and his twin sister, Anna Margaretha Infeld were born to Joseph and Christina Infeld. George was baptized 10 Feb 1759 in the Canadochly Union Church in York, PA. 1771 - Bedford Co. created from Cumberland Co. PA 1781 - George INFIELD is taxed in York Co. PA (No acres, negroes, horses, cattle.) 1782 - George INFIELD is taxed in York Co. PA (Single man.) 1782 - (About) Marries his wife, Barbara. (Her maiden name is unknown.) 1783 - George IMFELT is listed in York Co. PA (No acres, 1 inhabitant, no servants, no negros.) 1784 - Franklin County was created from Cumberland Co. PA 1790 - George EMFIELD is listed as the Head of Household in Franklin Co. PA Census 1796 - George EMFIELD is shown as having 50 acres of land in Bedford Co. PA survey. 1799 - George EMFIELD sells part of the 50 acres in Bedford Co. PA. 1800 - George EMPFIELD is listed as Head of Household in Hopewell, Woodbury Twp. Bedford Co., PA. 1803 - INDIANA COUNTY made from sections of Lycoming & Westmoreland Counties. 1804 - George EMPFIELD owns a grist mill on Yellow Creek in Indiana Co. He sells the balance of his 50 acres (in Bedford Co.) after moving to Indiana Co., PA. 1806 - George EMPFIELD buys 326 acres of land on Yellow Creek from Sheriff Thomas McCartney on Nov 1, 1806. The place where he lived was called "Hope", later changed to "Suncliff". It no longer exists today. 1807 - George Empfield is listed in Tax records of Wheatfield Twp. Indiana Co., PA. 1810 - George EMPFIELD dies in 1810 and was buried on his property next to the road that lead to Indiana, Indiana Co., PA. His property was divided amongst his children, his youngest daughter was cut off in his will, receiving only one dollar. His widow Barbara, later marries a Christopher Keller, they end up divorcing a few year later in 1821.
Will of George Emfield - 1810 --------------------------------------- In the name of God Amen I George Emfield of the County of Indiana, being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men oust* to die Do make and - this may last will and testament, that is to say principlally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hand of God Almighty that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a decent Christian burial at the discretion of my Executors, nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God, and as touching such worldly estate where with it hath pleased God to help one in this life I give demise and dispose of the same in the follwing manner and form.
After my funeral expenses and lawful debts are paid First I give and bequeath to Barbara my dearly beloved wife all my movable property to dispose of as she sees proper, all debts due to me included and likewise I bequeath all my lands and tenements freely to possessed and enjoyed during her natural life, and she is to keep and take care of her children till they are capable of doing for themselves, and after her decease the land is to be sold and the price to be equally divided amongst my children excepting my daughter Mary I leave and bequeath unto her one dollar to be paid at her Mothers decease and those of my children that have received of my property it is to be considered to them as part of their legacy.
I likewise appoint my well beloved wife Barbara my sole Executor - and I do hereby utterly disallow revoke and annul all and every other forever Testaments, wills legacies bequeaths and executors by in any wise before named willed and bequeathed; ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament.
In witness where I have here unto set my hand and seal this twenty-second day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ten (1810). Signed Sealed published pronounced and declared by the said George Emfield as his last will and testament in his presence and in the presence of us who hath here unto Subscribed our names, Isaac Griffith Alex Telfer. George Emfield (Seal). Be it remembered that the foregoing will or instrument of writing was duly proved by the subscribing witness on the 26th day of June 1810 before James McLain-Reg.
The following is a newspaper abstract from the "Washington Spy - Hagerstown" published in the "Western Maryland Newspaper Abstracts, 1786-1798", page 44, number 305.
"WSM Nov. 1, 1793 - House to be sold in Hagerstown, Martin Brengman & George Enfield, at Burchartt's Mill, near Hagerstown, offers reward for apprentice boy named John West, nearly 15, speaks both English and German, inveigled and stole away by a certain Henry Butcher, who appears to be half Indian, half mulatto, they have taken the road to Pittsburgh."
Note: Hagerstown is located in Washington County, Maryland. In the same vicinity is Leitersburg where Jacob's Lutheran Church is located. This church was attended by the residents of Franklin County, PA and Washington County, MD. Barbara Emzfiehl, wife of George Emzfiehl was sponsor to Anna Barbara of Leonhart Wiest (aka: West) and Elizabeth on April 21, 1793. Barbara Empfiel was sponsor to Maria Barbara of John Zentmyer and Barbara on May 20, 1792.
George and Barbara Emfield were enumerated in the Franklin County, PA Census of 1790.
