George M. T. Thomas died from sickness while serving in the Army of the CSA. His family went by ox cart to is grave at Marthasville (Atlanta), GA and cut trees, made charcoal, packed his body in a box of charcoal and brought it to the Smith Family Cemetery where he was buried beside his wife and daughter, Maria Jane, who died at the age 21 in Childbirth.
