GERDA VIRKS October 18, 1914 - May 19, 2010
Virks, Gerda, 95, of Cranston died on Wednesday, May 19th at the Scandinavian Nursing Home. Born in Puka, Estonia, she was the daughter of Jaan Virks and Alvine (Teska) Virks.
Ms. Virks was a graduate of Tartu Tütarlaste Gümnaasium in Tartu, Estonia, after which she attended Tartu Ülikool. Forced to leave Estonia as a result of the upheaval of World War II, she continued her education at the Universities of Göttingen and Freiburg, majoring in Romance Languages and Literature. After emigrating to the United States in 1951, she attended the Catholic University in Washington DC, receiving a Master of Library Science degree in 1959.
Ms. Virks worked as a librarian at the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC for many years until her retirement in 1979 at which time she moved to Cranston to be closer to her family. She was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church and an enthusiastic participant in the Bible Study class.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews: Piret Congdon, Ülle Virks, Arvo Virks, Vilja Virks Lee, Toivo Haug, Urmas Haug, Anneli Haug; and her many great nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Dr. Johannes Virks and the late Arno Aug.
