  • b3. Gerrit, date of birth or baptism not known.
    • He married firstly Elisabeth Vivier in 1722 and secondly Maria Provo (Prevost) around 1731. He died around 1737, leaving 8 children.

Gerrit van Wijk ( Willemsz: die staan vir Willem se seun en is dus nie deel van sy van nie)

of De Vaderlandse Rietklooff, Piquetberg

died circa 1737

will dated 27 March 1731

and filed 8 January 1738

Notes:

He would seem to have been working as a farmhand (knegt) for Willem Basson on the latter's property in Cape Town between 1711 and 1713.

On the 7th November 1712, named as Gerrit (Willem se seun) van Wyk, he requested and was granted permission to move from living in the Drakenstein District, to that of the Cape.

Details of his family come from the Inventory taken in 1730 after the death of his first wife, Elizabeth Vivier, the joint will he made with his second wife, Maria Provo (1731) and the will she made before her marriage to Gerrit van Schalkwyk (1740).

The farm, Vaderlandse Rietkloof, was sold in 1730 at the settling up of the estate of Elisabeth Vivier. I don't know if Gerrit bought it in himself or not.

For a discussion of his parentage and place in the family tree, see my (Richard Ball's) notes on the several Gerrit van Wijks, and for a general discussion of the early Van Wijks see my introduction.

--------------------

It seems possible that Gerrit Willemsz van Wyk is actually Gerrit Arij van Wyk, the adult son of Arij van Wyk.

Arij van Wyk had a son called Gerrit but one researcher (Richard Ball:Arij van Wijk--http://www.stamouers.com/) says:

b8. Gerrit van Wijk, baptized 14 December 1707, Stellenbosch, most probably buried before 12 August 1708, Stellenbosch. He was not mentioned in his parent's will of 1713, so had presumably died before that date.

The best account of the van Wyk family is given by Richard Ball: http://www.ballfamilyrecords.co.uk/notes/VanWijk_Gerrit.htm

In the Inventory drawn up on 16th August 1730 after the death of Elisabeth Vivier, her husband is named as Gerrit van Wijk, but in the joint will made by him with his second wife6, Maria Provo, he is named as Gerrit Willemsz: van wijk. This will was presented to the Weeskamer on 8th January 1738.

And in the Instrument drawn up by Maria Provo upon her subsequent marriage with Gerrit van Schalkwijk, dated 21st October 17407, her late husband is again named as Gerrit Willemsz: van Wijk.

This would imply that the Gerrit van Wijk who was married firstly to Elisabeth Vivier and subsequently to Maria Provo, had died before January 1738 and was the son of someone called Willem (see my notes on his probable parentage).
