Gerrit worked for Pekanbaru Rail Road in Pekenbaru, Riau, Sumatra, Indonesia (Dutch East Indies at the time). He survived the Japanese Concentration Camp but died shortly after the war from exhaustion. His mother did not survive the Concentration Camp.
