Gertrude Hutchison was the daughter of John and Theodocia Snelling, She was born in Grundy County, Missouri on September 16, 1949 Her father died in California after leaving his family to go to the gold rush. In 1851 Gertrude, along with her mother and siblings, settled in Lane County, Oregon. She married widower Elias Williams on Sept. 5, 1868 in Springfield, Oregon. Elias had two children and they had nine more together.

Gertrude appears on the 1850 US Census for Grundy County, Missouri, where she is listed as being eleven months old, living with her parents and three siblings. There is one obvious error and one possible error on the census form. She is listed as a "labourer" born in Kentucky. She was certainly too young to be a laborer and her other documents show that she was born in Missouri.
