Gilbert Hamilton, born 16th May 1715, son of William H. above mentioned ; educated at Univ. of Edin. ; licen. by Presb. of Dalkeith 7th Sept. 1736; pres. by John, Earl of Ruglen, 21st Sept. 1736; ord. 28th March 1737 ; D.D. (King's College, Aberdeen, 1760); Moderator of Assembly 19th May 1768; died 17th May 1772. He marr.

(1) 9th Jan. 1742, Isabel, daugh. of James Smith of Nether Alderston

(2) 4th March 1754, Margaret, daugh. of John Craigie of Dunbarnie, and had issue —

  • Anne Cockburn, born 27th June 1756 ;
  • Mary, born 24th Feb. 1758 (marr. William Dinwiddie, Manchester) ;
  • Susan, born 6th Jan. 1761 (marr. 14th Sept. 1786, Patrick Anderson, W.S.), died 18th July 1821.
