About Gilbert Johnston, Sr.

Gilbert, John’s second son, married to his Irish cousin Caroline Johnstone of Armagh, entertained his father sentiments, regarding the then rulers of Great Britain as usurpers.

Gilbert, third son of James Johnstone, 1st Earl of Annandale, left Scotland and went to Ireland in 1715. He married there in 1724. In 1745 Gilbert and his eldest son, Gilbert Johnstone Jr., joined the chevalier Charles Edward Stuart and were at Culloden (1746), where the elder was wounded, but they escaped and with their family came to North Carolina in 1746, as exiles - outlaws.

Gilbert Sr, died at "Brompton", one of Governor Gabriel's estates on Cape Fear in 1775.
