About Gilbert Johnstone, Jr.

A Patriot of the American Revolution for NORTH CAROLINA. DAR Ancestor # A063930

Gilbert Johnstone (1725-94), raised and equipped a company of partisan horsemen and served under Marion during the Revolution. His son Hugo was in his command and their military orders were signed by John Rutledge. He was born in Ireland and died in North Carolina. (The National Society for the Daughters of the American Revolutions Volume 17, page 239 - Mrs. Virginia Eliza Powell Pickett. DAR ID Number 16646)

"In 1776, Gilbert Johnstone Jr., and his eldest son, Hugo, raised and equipped a squadron of partisan light horse and led them, under Folsome in North Carolina, 1776 to 1780, and under Marion in South Carolina, 1780-1783, "without pay or bounty".

"Some Prominent Virginia Families" by Louise Pecquet du Bellet -------------------- Gilbert of Johnstone is first named as a witness in a charter by Thomas Randolph, Earl of Moray, Lord of Annandale and Man, in favour of William Murray, of the lands of Cumlongan and Ruthwell. His lands of Brackanthwaite were in 1333 bestowed by King Edward III upon Henry Percy. In 1347 he was present at an inquest at Lochmaben, and he is said to have died about 1370. He was succeeded by Sir John Johnstone. -------------------- Gilbert, along with the Earl of Menteith and Buchan and other, in July 1249, is a witness to a grant to Sir Robert Bruce (the competitor) of the lands of Ecclefechan.
