She was born about 1691 in Wales. She was the daughter of Edward Foulke of Coed y Foel Llanfor, parish of Llandderfel, Merionethshire, Wales and Ellin (Eleanor) Hugh of Spytu Parish, Denbighshire, North Wales (Gwynedd).
Gwen immigrated with her parents and 8 siblings from Wales to Philadelphia aboard the ship "Robert and Elizabeth," arriving July 17, 1698. The family settled in the Quaker community of Gwynedd township and were among the first settlers there.
Gwen married Alexander Edwards, son of Alexander and Margaret(ap Jon) Edwards of Montgomery township, on December 6, 1703 at the Gwynedd meeting house. They had 6 children:
