About James Halley, Sr

James Halley was a prosperous planter. At the time of his death he owned several plantations and considerable property (including a number of slaves who were then considered personal property). The home plantation was Pleasant Green. The church that the family attended is about 2.5 miles from his home and several members of the family are buried in this church yard and the tombstones are still standing. The building was a brick structure and in 1862 Federal Troops tore the church down and used the bricks for building their winter quarters. James Halley and his wife Elizabeth are buried in the family burying fround at Pleasant Green, which is enclosed by a high stone wall and can never be sold.

James Halley had grants of land from Lord Fairfax for several tracts, the original grant dated May 16, 1742 for 690 acres, written on parchment; a second grant dated Sept 10, 1767 for 780 acres.
