John Cowles, born in England; died September 15, 1675 in Hadley, Hampshire, Mass.; married (1) Hannah Varnum; married (2) Rachel Hart. From: Olive Mae Lindell < firstname.lastname@example.org > : I have the two volumn set of the Cowles Genealogy, Compiled by Col Calvin Duvall Cowles 1929. My Brother had an original copy. My Cowles family has seemed to have kept records. One story is that John Cole ;the farmer; changed his name to Cowles because their were two John Cole, The other was John Cole , the carpenter. In my g grandfather's account of name change. It says Cowles is to be pronounced as in bowl, not cow.
