About Hannah Rebecca Dustin

Hannah Rebecca Dustin was the fourth child born May 30, 1886, in Safford, Graham, Arizona, to Hyrum Nephi Dustin and Rebecca Malinda Stevens Dustin. By 1900, Hannah and her family were living in Garden, Rich, Utah, and were listed in the census record as follows: Nephi H., 44, Rebecca M., 41, Hyrum A., 23, Seth C., 20, James C., 17, Hannah R., 14, Julia A., 10, and Vilda, 9 years old. Hyrum Nephi and Rebecca Malinda Dustin had been married for 25 years, had given birth to 7 children, 6 of whom were still living. Hyrum Nephi was working as a farmer, and owned his own farm free from a mortgage. His two sons, Hyrum A., and Seth C., were also working as farm laborers, and all the other children were at school. Sadly, two years later, Hannah's mother, Rebecca Malinda Stevens Dustin, passed away. Hannah married Earl Shakespeare Hall on Valentine's day in 1906. Earl was 13 years older than Rebecca.

In the 1910 U.S. Federal Census, their family was listed as follows: Hyrum N., 54, Hyrum A., 33, James L., 27, Vilda, 19, Hanna Rebecca Dustin Hall, 23, and her husband, Earl Shakespeare Hall, 36, and their first two children, Elizabeth M., 3, and Luella, 1 year, 5 months old. Hannah and Earl had been married for four years. Living next door was Hyrum N. and Rebecca M.'s son, Seth B., 30, and his wife Nina S., 24, and their son, Nephi N., 2 years old. They had been married for 3 years. Hyrum N., was still working as a farmer, his sons Hyrum A., and James L., and Seth B. were laborers working at odd jobs, and Earl was working as a laborer for a sheep herder.

By the 1920 census, Earl and Hannah were living in Bates, Teton, Idaho, and were listed as follows with their family: Earl S., 47, Hannah R., 32, Elizabeth M., 13, Luella, 11, Thelma, 8, Hyrum E., 6, Henry R., 4 years, 1 months, and Vilda, one year and 9 months old. Another son, George R., was born in 1921, and a daughter Lucy in 1922, but she lived less than one month. And even more tragically, just two years later, on January 19, 1924, Hannah passed away at the very young age of 37 years old, when her youngest child was only about 3 years old.

Hannah's death certificate stated the cause of her death was unknown. However, information provided by a descendant indicated that the cause of her death was due to complications from measles while she was pregnant with her ninth child. Hannah Rebecca Dustin Hall's own grandmother, Rebecca Welker Stevens, died at the young age of only 28 years old shortly after the birth of her 5th child in 1863.

In the 1930 U.S. Federal Census for Chapin, Teton, Idaho, the family was listed as: Earl S., 57, Elizabeth H., 23, Hyrum E., 15, Henry, 14, Vilda R., 12, and George R., 9. Earl was working as a farm laborer.

n the 1940 U.S. Federal Census, Earl, 67, was living alone in Driggs, Teton County, Idaho and was listed as a widowed head of household. He owned his own home, valued at $700.00, and was working as a sheepherder on a ranch, and the highest grade he completed was the third grade. For the 10 weeks he worked in 1939, he earned $100.00. There are other Hall families on the same census page, including Earl's son, Henry Rosell Hall, 24, his wife, Illa, 23, and their children: Phyllis, 4, Doyle, 3, and Vena R., age 7 months. There was another listing for Vilda Ellis, 22, Earl's daughter, who was a widow living with her daughter, Irene, 2, and her sister, Elizabeth Hall, 33, and Elizabeth's brother, George Hall, 19. So at least Earl had some of his family living nearby. Earl's son Henry was working as a farm laborer, as was George Hall. Vilda Ellis may have also had her former husband's family nearby, because listed on the same page of the census was a Walter Ellis, 32, his wife, June, 25, and their son, Gary, 4, and daughter Gloria, 2. Perhaps these were Vilda's brother and sister-in-law.

Earl Shakespeare Hall, born November 8, 1872, in Nevada, Vernon County, Missouri, passed away September 18, 1958, in Driggs, Teton, Idaho. He was buried in the Bates Cemetery, with his wife, Hannah Rebecca.

Earl and Hannah's son, Hyrum Earl, married Myrtle Naomi Marcum, who was born June 4, 1915, and died February 11, 2003. They had 8 children: Betty, Ruth, Marc, Earl, Hyrum, Arnold, Naomi and Rachel.
