About Harpert Maertensz (Tromp)

Volgens de onderzoekers Henk Morien en Hans Nagtegaal in "Ons Voorgeslacht" nr. 67, febr. 2012, blz. [Recia]

Youth of Harpert

Harpert Maertensz (van der) Tromp (van der Wel(l)) was a young boy of about 10 to 12 years old when he ran away from home to become a sailor in the Dutch Navy. He wanted to be at sea and did not wanted to step in his fathers footsteps. His father was a man out of the rich Mayor family Van der Wel. Many men out of the family Van der Wel(l) were Mayor of a city or village, most of them of the city Delft, where Harpert was born. If the men Van der Well were not Mayor, they were Doctor or Pharmacist, but not sailors, that occupation was below their standing, was their opinion, so Harpert left home to never come back. He did not mention his surname Van der Wel anymore and started using his nickname 'Tromp' as his surname later on, since he sailed on a ship named 'the Elephant Trunk' (tromp = trunk). The 'Collection Tromp' (family archive of the family Tromp) in the Archive of the city Delft gives us some information about the names of the forefathers of Harpert.

Family Van der Wel(l) from Delft

I think he restored the family ties later, because when his son, Admiral Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp died, many people named Van der Well were present at his funeral (1653). And Harpert also named his only son after his father, Maerten Van der Wel(l), so it means, he respected his father and his father most probably knew that his grandson was named after him. Unfortunately we do not know much about the parents of Harpert Maertenszoon Van der Tromp (Van der Well), fot that we have to visit the archives of Brielle (alias Den Briel) and I did not have the time and possibility to do so. But we can assume that Harpert was out of the Mayor family Van der Well of the city Delft.

Death of Harpert

Harpert got caught in a fight at sea, a fight with pirates. Harpert was together with his son Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp (12 years of age) when this happened. Maarten got captured by the pirates and they kept him as their "slave" and prisoner to work on board of their ship, but they treated him well and little Maarten learned a lot from these pirates, for instance how to fight at sea. And so this little boy grew up to became a very famous Dutch sea hero and Admiral in the Dutch Navy, Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp. [Recia]
