It is believed that Harriet was the either :- - the daughter of a church minister who came to the region with 2 daughters, Harriet being one of the daughters, or - the illegitimate daughter of that Harriet. Apparently Harriet named her daughter Harriet, but did not register the birth. (Source: Eileen Hogbin - details provided by a descendant who spent 3 days in Sydney with various Govenment Departments trying to get proof of the birth for their own passport) MARRIAGE: The NSW Marriage Registration Transcript states that Harriet Shappard was a 'sinister', place of birth 'not stated', occupation given as 'labourer's daughter', age 'not stated', usual residence as 'Rocky River', farther's & mother's name and occupations were 'not stated'. Bride's surname is clearly recorded as "SHAPPARD" in this register; bride's signature is recorded as "Harriet SHAPPEARD" in this register. The Transcript also states that 'The consent of the Guardian of Minor was given'. From this it appears that Harriet was a minor as William HOGBIN was 24 yrs old. NOTE: There are 3 different spellings of the name used by researchers and shown in the BDM records .. Sheppard / Shepherd / Shappard / Shappeard. STORY OF INTEREST: After her husbands death, Harriet was asked about a black eye that William had and her response was something like ".. if I meet him in heaven I'll give him another one .."
