.2 Hierum (Hiram, Hierom, Herrorum) Gaines (ca 1731 - ca 1785) of Albermarle Co., VA. and later Elbert Co.,GA ( 1783 census of Albermarle Co., VA.). The only known reference which identifies his wife is dound in the “Genealogy of the Lewis family” by W. Terrell Lewis, p 213: “Sarah Taliaferro, the first wife of John Lewis (1750), of Albermarle Co., VA., had a sister Margaret who married Hiram Gaines, and David Nimmo, of the same county, married Gaines daughter.”

Apparently the source of this statement is from the issue of Dec. 3, 1881 of the Richmond Standard. In an article by W.T. Lewis of Lewisville, Miss., “Sarah Taliaferro who married John Lewis of Albermarle Co., had a sister , Pegg or Margaret who married Hiram Gaines....I obtained this information from Jesse Lewis, a Revolutionary soldier who died in Albermarle in 1849.” (Mary R. Riley)

pg. 132

No documentary evidence of this statement was cited. The compiler has searched Taliaferro lines only to find Sarah Taliaferro, dt. of Capt. Richard Taliaferro( 1730-1748), wife Rose Berryman, did marry John Lewis, but there is no record of her having a sister named Margaret. Probably Margaret and Sarah were cousins and not sisters. Even granting that they were cousins, no record in the Taliaferro lines has a Margaret Taliaferro marrying Hiram Gaines.

In a treatise, “Virginia Background of some Georgia Gaines Families by Mary R. Riley is found a possible answer to the problem, quote, “Mr McFarland Williams is of the opinion that Richard and Dorrity Gaines had another son, Hierom Gaines, born about 1730. He was of St. Anne’s Parrish, Albermarle Co.,VA, as early as 1748. Hierome’s wife is said by the Lewis family records to have been Margaret Taliaferro, a sister to Sarah Taliaferro who married John Lewis. After exhaustive research into the available Taliaferro records, the writer is of the opinion that Margaret may have been the granddaughter of Robert Taliaferro III and his wife Margaret (Buckner?) of Saint Mary’s Parish, Essex Co.,VA 1711-21 (J.E. Dorman, Essex Co., 1717-1722, p 35).”

The first record on Hierom Gaines of Albermarle Co.,VA is dated 12/ 23/ 1748 wherein he is a witness to a sale. Then follows several deeds on record of the purchase and sale of lands.

“Oct. 13, 1774. Herrorum and wife Peggy Gaines of Albermarle Co., VA to James Stevens 339 acres Buck Island creek-land of letters patented 16 February 1771- Henry Woods’ line, Dr. Giles Allegro’s line. Wit: Thomas F. Bennett, John Bell, John Blalock.”

Hierom Gaines had personal property recorded in Albermarle Co., VA from 1782 - 1792 after which he and his sons, William, Francis, Henry, and Hierom Jr. removed to GA. There were some deed records in Albermarle Co., VA., involving Hiram and his sons;

“Feb. 15, 1782. William Gaines bought 400 acres of land on Plum Tree Creek...Wits: Heiram Gaines and David Nimmo.” Witnesses were Heirom Gaines Sr. and his son in law, David Nimmo. Wm. Gaines, a son of Heirom Gaines. “Dec. 8, 1785. Wm. Gaines sold the 400 acres of land on Plum Creek to Heirom Gaines...Wits: Humphrey Gaines, David Nimmo and Heirom Gaines.”

Sale was to Heirom Gaines Sr. by his son, Wm. Wits. were sons Humphrey and Heirom Jr. and his son-in-law David Nimmo.

In Elbert Co. are found the last records in the deed books concerning Heirom Gaines Sr.

Deed book H p. 156 - “Know all men by these presents that I, Hiram Gaines, Sr. for and in consideration of natural love and affection which I bear my son Henry Gaines (both of Elbert Co., GA) as well as for further consideration of $1 to me in hand paid by him at or before ensealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt of which is hearby aknowledged, have given and granted and by these presents do give and grant unto the said Henry Gaines one Negro boy Chesher, 11 years of age. And the said Heirom Gaines Sr. assigns same against any claim of my heirs, executers or administrators. 6 May 1803.”

Deed Book J, p. 188-9. Heirom Gaines Senr. for good will and affection to my son William Gaines, I give no. 1 lott in Baldwin Co., GA of 202.5 acres. 19 Oct. 1805. Wit: John Carroll, Robert Roebuck, John Cunningham. Rec. 31 Oct. 1805.

Since Richard Gaines, the eldest son was born 5/4/1752, his fatherHeirom Gaines must have been at least 20 years of age at the time and his mother, Margaret, 18 or 19 years of age. Hence Heirom Gaines, b: ca 1732 and his wife Margaret b: ca 1732 are probable dates of birth
