About Helen Louise Neilson

Helen was an energetic girl and woman. Her childhood and family life are described in her 1937 book, "My Father and My Mother," which seems to have been written to counteract the focus on just her father in her brother Louis's 1927 book, "The Yankee of the Yards. The biography of Gustavus Franklin Swift."

She attended Wellesley College for a year, returning to Chicago when her older sister, Annie May, died of typhoid complications. Apparently she attended Ripon College later, since she was elected to its board of directors as an alumnae. She married Edward Morris first, circa 1891. They had several children, and Edward died in 1913, leaving her with about $40 million. She remarried in 1918, to Francis Neilson, an English actor, writer and MP. She financed publication of "The Freeman," a radical political journal founded by her husband, for several years. She collected paintings, donating them to several major art museums.
