About Hendrik Jacob Clignet van Lelyveld

It is said on quite good authority that he, before sitting on any chair, would remove his handkerchief from his upper pocket and place this on the chair before seating himself. He was an extremely "hardkoppige van Leiyveld" refusing to make the trip to Holland in order to collect his portion of the VAN LELYVELD FORTUNE, which amounted to at that time $7000. This was the amount that had been left to HENRI JACOB VAN LELYVELD by his parents whom he had predeceased. Professor Dorij's farther had written out to the Cape that this was ready to be paid out to the edest daughter of Philip and Elizabeth Frost, born Doughty (They were the original 1820 Settlers).

A news 'item reporting on his death appeared in the local paper:

"It is with regret that we hear of the health of Mr. Henri Jacob Clignett van Lelyveld, who died in Lydenberg South Africa, on the 16th February, aged 77 years, an old inhabitant of Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage. Deceased married Mary Nash Frost eldest daughter of Mr. P Frost Snr., one of the British settlers of 1820. She is still alive and now living in the Free State, having returned from the Transvaal after her husband's death to spend the remainder of her days with her daughters. Deceased was a friend of all, fed and sheltered many a hungry and houseless family and we hope found friends in the Transvaal, where he died among strangers. Having had many reverses in this world, may he be richly rewarded in the next. He leaves 4 sons and 5 daughters, numerous grand and great grand children. He was the eldest son of the late Mr van Lelyveld who came to South Africa in 1806 for the Dutch Government and grandson of Jan van Lelyveld of Leiden in Holland".

He has the same headstone as his son Philip Frost van Lelyveld with the Family Coat of Arms - Grave 16 Lydenburg
