His tombstone lists his birth year as 1823; however, there are many sources that indicates that his birth year may have been otherwise. Did the engraver misread the instructions and use a '3' instead of an '8'? Or, was there some confusion when he died?

The census of 1850 would indicate that he was born in 1828. The census in 1860 would indicate that he was born in 1829. The 1870 census would indicate that he was born in 1826. The 1880 census would indicate that he was born in 1825.

So, take your pick!
