About Henry Fox, Sr., Gentleman

Henry Fox was the first of the Fox family to patent lands and establish a home in what is now King William County, Virginia. He inherited land in both Gloucester County Virginia in 1683 and what is now King William County (formerly King and Queen County; it was formed in 1702).

Henry Fox was prominent in the affairs of the county, holding at one time or another every high office. He was a juror in a court held in James City on 24 October, 1691 ("The Fox Line," Bulletin of Gen Society of Old Tryon County, North Carolina, Volume XI #1, February 1984, by H. E. Hubbard). He was Vestryman of St. John's Parish, King and Queen County, in 1695, and continued to serve when the county fell within the boundaries of King William County. He served the jury of the "Gene" Court held at James City October the 24th 169? (Executive Journals, Council of Colonial Virginia, I, page 103). He was magistrate in King and Queen prior to February 1698, at which time he was "recommended by the Council to his former place on Commission of the peace." The recommendation was approved by the Governor. (Executive Journals, Council of Colonial Virginia, I, page 411). At the council of his Majesty's Royal College of William and Mary on March 12, 1701/02, his Excellency, Governor Francis Nicholson, with the advice of his Majesty's Honorable Council, nominated and appointed the Justices for the new county of King William. The name of Henry Fox was first on the list (Executive Journals, Council of Colonial Virginia, II, page 225). Henry Fox was commissioned the first sheriff of King William on February 17, 1702, but may not have served. He was again appointed Sheriff in October 1705. (King William Records, I, page 149) for a period of time around 1685, Henry Fox, Gentleman, was Burgess from King William County (Journals, House of Burgesses 1702-1712). Also a resident of King and Queen County (Marriages of Some Virginia Residents 1607-1800 by Dorothy Ford Wulfeck, Genealogical Publications, 1986, page 52). That publication also verifies his birth/death dates and those of Ann West's parents.

In 1952 a table was placed in the King William Courthouse inscribed as follows: "Dedicated to the memory of Henry Fox, first presiding Justice of the Court, 20 April 1702, and also a Burgess and Sheriff of King William, who, with Captain Richard Littlepage, jointly deeded on 20 January, 1702 to the newly formed county of King William the land on which the first courthouse stood and on which the present courthouse was built circa 1725."

In 1704 he held over 2,000 acres in King William County and was seated at "Huntington," an elegant brick mansion on the Mattaponi River.

Notes

  • from Fox FamilyTreeDNA Project Website - Results Updated 3/29/2010: Haplogroup R1b - Southern USA Foxes. Enough Southern US Fox descendants have been identified in the R-M269 Haplogroup that they have been grouped together in the Y-DNA results tabulation as "Southern US R-M269." Many members of this Southern R-M269 Group had suspected a connection to Henry Fox and Anne West of Virginia but we now have a definitive set of five results (common ancestor being Henry Fox’s grandson Henry Fox, III,) that appear to define this family line and distinguish it from other Fox families.  We would still like to take the common ancestors back all the way to Henry Fox and Anne West and even beyond.
