This well  known citizen and buisness man of  Linton was born in Stockton township, Greene county,, December 4, 1870. He is the son of Levi and Rachel (Hatfield) Gastineau., both natives of this county.. The former was a pioneer farmer, having spent all his mature years on a farm. He found farm work a pleasure and being industrious, made the work a success. He died at the  age of fifty years and his wife at the age of  fifty-nine years. They had a  family of thirteen children of whom nine are living.. They are Marion,  Ann West, James, Martha Rose, Bettie Haseman,, Patience, P.E.., Grant and Henry.. James is a plumber living in Alhambra, California. P.E.. is a passenger conductor  living in Indianapolis. At present he is connected with the Indianapolis & Vincennes Railroad company. Grant is a farmer near Palestine, Illinois. 

Henry Gastineau, the subject of this sketch, was reared on the old home place, and farmed until he was twenty years old. He was educated in the public schools in Stockton township, near Linton, to which city he moved in 1894. He has been engaged in the mercantile and real estate business since that time. He was in the general merchandise business for two years, since which time he has devoted his energies to buying, selling and building in all kinds of real estate.. He built the Gastineau block on West Vincennes street in 1904. It is one of the handsomest blocks in the city,, the building costing about twenty-five thousand dollars.. He owns a two story stone-front building on North Main Street and two residences..

In 1900 he took a six-month trip to the Pacific coast and California to visit his brother James, and through the south. The subject was married in 1897 to Sarah McKeag, a native of Greene County. She lived two years after her marriage.

The subject married his present wife, Nettie A. Jeffers, in 1902.. She was reared near Riley, Indiana.. Two daughters have been born to this union: Henrietta born May 7, 1904 and Opal born June 2, 1907..

Mr. Gastineau is a member of the Woodman of the World and of the Knights of Pythias and Knights and Ladies Honor... His political views are always with the republicans but he has never held office.. He is a member of the baptist church and his wife belongd to the methodist church.. The Gastineau family are mostly members of the christain church. They are of french antecedents. The Hatfield family as represented by the mother of the subject were among the pioneers of Greene county, Indiana,, having come her from Tennessee. Mr. Gastineau is regarded as on of Linton's best business men and he stands high not only in the business wold, but in all circles of that city, owing to his honroable business methods, his courteous manners and his upright principles."

Henry4 Gastineau was born 4 December 1870 Stockton Township, Greene County, Indiana (Biographical Memoirs of Greene County, Indiana, p. 1172.). He worked on the family farm as a young man, then moved into Linton in 1894, where he engaged in general merchandising for two years [Biographical Memoirs of Greene County, Indiana, p. 1172-73]. He married 1st Sarah McKig 13 April 1897 Greene County, Indiana [Greene County, Indiana, Marriage Records, Book O, p. 449; Biographical Memoirs of Greene County, Indiana, p. 1173] (her 2nd husband).

He appeared on the 1900 census in Stockton Township, Greene County, Indiana, ED 37, p. 218B:

He married 2nd Nettie A. Jeffers in 1902 Greene County, Indiana. He engaged in real estate (built the "Gastineau block" on West Vincennes St., Linton, in 1904), and owned several business buildings in Linton. He was a member of the Baptist Church, the Woodmen of the World, Knights of Pythias, and Knights & Ladies of Honor.
