Henry Bernard Bartels was born in Dubuque County, January 17, 1856 and passed away at his home 8 miles southeast of Maynard at one o'clock Friday morning, September 23, following a complication of diseases.
He grew to manhood near Dubuque and on January 23, 1880 he was married to katherine Busch. To this union were born nine children, two sons, John and George passed away in 1918.
Mr. and Mrs. Bartels farmed near Maynard until about 19 years ago when they moved to Maynard when Mrs. Bartels died May 7, 1926. July 26, 1928, he was married to Mrs. Sylvia Chase who has tenderly cared for him through his illness.
Mr. Bartels has been a member of the Modern Woodman of America for many years and of the Lutheran church. Besides his widow, seven children, Mrs. Caroline Beckner, Robert Bartels of Oelwein, Henry, Charlie, Julius, Will Bartels and Mrs. Louise Bencke of Maynard; 36 grandchildren and 15 great grand children also 4 brothers, Ed, Robert and Henry of Dubuque; August of Wisconsin; 5 sisters, Mrs. Dora Schmidt of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Emma Kemp of New Hampton, Mrs. Mary Schroder of Indian; Mrs. Lena Gunter of Dubuque and Mrs. Anna Dasenbrock of Lock Port, Ill. are left to mourn. Two sisters, Mrs. Christine Gremmels, Mrs. Julia LaPage and 3 brothers, Fred, Otto and Will preceeded him in death.
Mr. Bartels was a good citizen and neighbor, always ready to lend a helping hand and he will be greatly missed in the community. Funeral services were held from the home at 12:30 and the Opera house at one o'clock, Sunday, Sept 25th conducted by Rev. Purley Jennison assisted by Ref. Hagerman. A male quartet composed of Dwight Kooker, Gerald Warnke, Lester Schmitt and Dr. Hall accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Lucy Nordyke furnished music.
The pall bearers were grandsons of the deceased; Elmer, Lester and Floyd Bencke, Lloyd Bartels, Harry and Loren Beckner.
The flower girls were granddaughers, Nellie and Dorothy Fleming, Olive and Hazel Bartels, Katherine and Elsie Bencke.
The Modern Woodmen exemplified their burial service at the grave after which interment was made in Long Grove Cemetery.

Julius was born on November 9, 1890 at the family farm located 2.5 miles East and 3 miles South of Maynard, Iowa. He died of stomach cancer on November 30, 1944 at his home in Maynard at the age of 54. The family knew that he had cancer as soon as he went to Rochester in March, but dad didn’t know until probably July when he began loosing so much weight. Back in those days you didn’t talk about cancer - it was sort of like leprosy. The Doctors thought it could possibly have been caused by a kick in the stomach by a calf (dad used to haul calves in a double decker on Wednesdays from Indep.
His two brothers, George and John, (only a year apart) got that 1918 flu that went around and died within 4 days of each other. One was 31 years old, and the other 32. One had two children and the other had eight children.
Brother Charles lived in Maynard, joined the Army, had no children, played the tuba in the town band, and had the only funeral in Maynard with a horse-drawn procession. He died at age 51 of a hart attack while cranking his car.
Brother Robert had 3 girls, lived in Oelwien, and died at age 52 of a hart attack while putting on his shoes.
Brother Henry was in the Army, adopted a girl, was a mail carrier from Oelwein who hauled the mail to different towns, and died of a heart attack at one of his mail stops at age 62.
Brother William joined the Army at age 15. He lied about his age, but when they found out they still let him stay to work as a cook until he was old enough. He reenlisted in WWII and was sent to Bavaria Germany in 1956. He had one daughter and died of a heart attack at age 56.
The girls lived to be 60 and 77.
