About Henry John Nelson

Henry J. Nelson (age 23) came to Tioga in 1900 from Starbuck, Minnesota. He secured a homestead claim near Tioga and proved his claim in 1905. He worked as a land locater for five years. His claim was later sold to August Nelson of Tioga.

Petra M. Wolla came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peder C. Wolla, October 21, 1902, at 20 and homesteaded a claim in West Bank. Petra and Henry were married May 24, 1906, and lived in the township for 44 years. They were the parents of nine children: Helmer, Mabel (Carlson), Arnold who died at three, Ruth (Riedel), Arthur, Carl, Kenneth, Karen who died at three, and Lillian who died at seven.

Travel was by horse and buggy in the summer and by sled in the winter, sometimes to a show held upstairs over Simon's old department store in Tioga. There were many different programs to attend, even Lawrence Welk played his accordian there when he was just starting out.

Helmer and Mabel started school in 1917 in the Moe School. In 1920 we had our own Wolla school where six of the children finished the eighth grade. Ruth was the only one to finish high school in Tioga.

All the children except Arthur, moved away and married and have families.

Henry Nelson worked for W.P.A. during the Dirty Thirties, doing a lot of road work to help keep a family in food and clothing.

The family belonged to the Benson Valley Church, later Trinity Lutheran, and all the children were confirmed there.

Dr. Stobie, a fat and friendly man, came to the house often when someone was sick. Mr. Easton was the druggist and groceries were bought from Lileskov and Simon in Tioga.

When Petra and Henry Nelson moved to Eureka, California on September 30, 1950, their son Arthur bought the homestead. In 1956 they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary with all of their living children present. They made three trips back to North Dakota to visit family and friends in Williams County. Petra died in 1961 and Henry eight years later at 92 and both are buried in Williams County.
