According to the 1870 census, he and his sister Martha Jane were living with their grandmother, Mary Park Parks, and uncles Samuel and Harvey Parks, along with an M. Davis (female). Mary Elizabeth, then about age 15, was not living in the same house.

In June 1890, he was apparently in Justin, Denton County, Texas, while his wife remained in Cincinnati, Washington County, Arkansas. The letter that indicates this shows that the two were fighting at the time.

Henry Speights Spivey papers, 1855-1940.
The material described in this catalog record is located in the collections of the Arkansas History Commission.
Henry Speights Spivey was born sometime between 1856 and 1859, the son of William Henry and Martha Jane Parks Spivey, in Cincinnati, Washington County, Ark. He and his two sisters were under the care of a legal guardian, W.D. Parks, from 1870 to 1878, as is evidenced in the records in this collection.
He married Jennie E. Harrell, age 22, also of Cincinnati, Ark., on 21 Mar. 1881.
Their daughter, Eula Vernon Spivey was born on 11 Jan. 1882, also in Cincinnati, Ark. She attended grade schools in Fayetteville, Ark., and Springrield, Mo., a reflection of the mobility of her family.
Records indicate that in 1899 H. Speights Spivey was a commercial traveling salesman and had moved to Little Rock. In 1900 he lived at 2400 Gaines Street, and in 1907 he contracted to have a house built there.
The city directories of Little Rock shows a varied career for H.S. Spivey. He was at times listed as an employee of
H.S. Spivey was also elected president of the Arkansas Travelers, 1906-1907.
