Agreement between the B.S.A. Company and F.W.F. JOHNSON entered into in Cape Town on 1st January, 1890 … to make or construct a good wagon road from Palapye to a point known as Mount HAMPDEN, … on or before 15th July, 1890:… to hold and occupy a certain portion of the territory… until the 30th day of September, 1890…

On 18th March the first volunteers were attested in Kimberley.

On 26th May Frank JOHNSON arrived from the south to take up his command….A week later, on 3rd June, the balance marched in. The first Regimental Orders of the Pioneer Corps were issued.

Maurice HEANY assumes command at Camp Cecil.

15th June

Pioneer Corps commences move to Macloutsie River, where Police are already camped.

17th June

5 men, who have requested to be released, are discharged from the Corps. [Known as the first 5]

'B' Troop, under command of Captain HOSTE, and accompanied by Captain SELOUS and Dr JAMESON, cross Shashi River. (The task of 'B' Troop was to cut the first 50 miles of road, so that the rest of the Column could move forward.)

18th July

Main body catches up 'B' Troop at the north side of the Tshabezi River.

'B' Troop resume road-building operation.

FEATHERSTONEHAUGH, Henry Westcott (?)-1917. No: 170.

Joined the Pioneer Corps on 14th July, 1890, having previously been attested into the B.S.A. Company's Police as one of 'Rhodes' Apostles'. Appointed to 'B' Troop, 14th July. Temporarily attached to 'A' Troop, 15th July. Trooper.

Served in B.B.P. before joining Pioneer Corps. Served in RAAFF's Rangers in the 1893 War. Served as a Trooper in the Matabeleland Relief Force, 1896. Later returned to South Africa. Served in the Anglo-Boer War. Served in the 1st World War as Officer i/c Transport and Remounts.

Invalided out of Army. Died in Transvaal, 17th February, 1917.

Married Marion Mathilda STANFORD (grand-daughter of Sir Robert STANFORD). Had issue, 3 sons and some daughters.
