About Herman Heinlaid

I do not know much about Herman (or Hermann in Estonian) other than that he grew up in Ratla among his brothers and sisters. He was the youngest of the brothers. I would like to know more about his two brothers though. My father went to school in Ratla and when we visited Ratla for the first time around 1993-94. He showed us where he went to school. It was an amazing feeling to slowly trying to find the Herman’s birthplace and to suddenly seeing a sign saying “Heinlaid”. We went in and looked around the house. It looked as it was empty, but suddenly the door opened and Alma Heinlaid (I think) came out. We looked in a photo album and some hour later Heinart (I think) showed up with their tractor. My father seemed very surprised because he thought that his only living relatives were Alide Rattur (died in 1994 and lived under hard conditions in Tallinn) and Aino Hiiuväin (living in Kuressaare). It would be interesting to know how and when his brothers died. I saw that Eduard died in 1941. My father said that he lived in Kuressaare for a while and showed us the spot where the house had been. Later I think he went to Tallinn and worked with something in the medical branch. My father served with the Germans before he manage to escape to Sweden the 20th Oct 44. I will put the text from Riigi arhiiv in Estonian. He said that he went for NCO training in Klooga and that he served as a medic. The Riigi arhiiv text said that he served at a hospital train. In the beginning and his salary went to her mother’s bank account but later to Erika PIHLAKAS who lived in Tallinn, Kungla 30- 3. I wonder if it was a girlfriend of Herman? I tried to search her on the internet, but I failed. The 20 October 1944, he and some friends managed to get a boat from Vilsandi, Saaremaa to Sweden. They ended up at Gotska Sandön first, later to Gotland and then to the Swedish mainland, where he work in the forest. He studied medicine and later became a medical doctor. He married Marie-Louise (Lolou) Palmblad and they got two children, Len and John. He later worked as head of research at a pharmaceutical company UCB. After that he helped my mother to run a company called BPG Industries. Later they got divorced and he moved back to Estonia. He thought Saaremaa was too lonely during the winters, so he moved to Pärnu instead. When Herman died, my brother John and I took him back to Saaremaa and buried him at Karja cemetary after a ceremony in an ice-cold Karja kirik. Afterwards we had a burial lunch at Rauni Baar in Tagavere.
