Hirsh Kaplinsky was the head of a partisan unit west of Minsk.
He had managed to escape slaughter from Zdzieciol, (west of Minsk), where Jewish Council members had actively encouraged acquisition of arms, and eight hundred had escaped from the ghetto. Three thousand perished on 6 August 1942.
One hundred and fifty of the eight hundred who had escaped were strong enough to form a partisan unit that went into action almost immediately. Four months later Kaplinsky was killed in action.
