-------------------- Great Grandfather of President Zachary Taylor -------------------- Born: Abt 1653, Northumberland Co., VA 660 Marriage: Sarah Allerton about 1700 660 Died: 25 May 1729, Northumberland Co., VA about age 76 660

Hancock married Sarah Allerton, daughter of Isaac Allerton, Jr. and Elizabeth Willoughby, about 1700.660 (Sarah Allerton was born about 1670 in Westmoreland Co., VA 660 and died on 17 May 1731 in Wicomico, Northumberland, VA 660.)

-------------------- The first Hancock Lee, as indicated above, was born in 1653 (actual date not known) at the Dividing Creek plantation in Northumberland County on the Northern Neck of Virginia. After the death of his father, Richard Henry, he eventually inherited the southern third of the Dividing Creek plantation, which he called Hancock’s Neck. Hancock I was married twice. He initially married Mary Kendall in 1675. She was born in 1661 at Newport House in Northhampton, Virginia and was the only daughter of Colonel William Kendall who owned the Newport House plantation and was a Burgess from Northhampton in 1657, 1662, 1663, and 1666 serving as Speaker of the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1666. Unfortunately, Mary Kendall died on December 24, 1694 leaving Hancock I with 3 children (See below). In 1696, Hancock I was married for a second time to Sarah Allerton and had 4 more children (See below). Sarah Allerton was born in 1671 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. She was the daughter of Isaac Allerton of Westmoreland and the granddaughter of Issac Allerton who originally came over on the “Mayflower” establishing the “Plymouth” Colony in Massachusetts. On her Mother’s side of the family, she was a great-granddaughter of Elder William Brewster, who also came over on the “Mayflower” and was a leader of the Plymouth Colony. Sarah Allerton died on May 17, 1731. -------------------- Hancock Lee, son of Richard and Anna Lee, was born in 1653, probably at DividingCreeks, in Northumberland county, and died May 25, 1709, being buried at "Ditchley," where his tombstone can still be seen with its inscription perfectly legible. This burying ground was used by this branch of the family for several generations, probably until the estate was sold in 1789 to Colonel James Ball Jr., whose descendants own it to-day. Hancock Lee is supposed to have settled in Northampton at the time of his first marriage in 1675, and to have returned to Northumberland county about 1686. The record of the public positions held by him, perhaps only partial, seems to agree with this supposition. He was justice for Northampton county in 1677, and held a similar position in Northumberland in 1687 and 1699, and was also a burgess for Northumberland county in 1688. A list of civil offices, dated June 3, 1699, names him as the "Naval Officer and Collector of Virginia Dutys in Northumberland County;" another list of the date of 1702 mentions him as a justice, showing him to have been in commission at the time of his death. The Northern Neck land records show that Hancock Lee patented land in Richmond county, on both sides of Rappahannock Horsepen Run and adjoining his own land, on the north side of Occoquan, in Stafford county, at the heads of the branches of Chapowamsie, in Stafford, and adjoining the land of Captain Thomas Harrison.

It has usually been stated that Hancock Lee built the old Ditchley mansion about 1687, but there is no evidence to substatiate this traditions. It is not even positively known whether the immigrant lived at "Ditchley" or "Cobb's Hall." Hancock Lee's will was made December 31, 1706, and was probated at Northumberland Court House, July 20, 1709. Of Hancock Lee, Bishop Meade wrote: "That He was a patron of the Church is shown by the fact that he presented a communion cup to the parish in 1729. In honor either of himself or father, or the whole family, the parish was called Lee parish, as may be seen by the inscription on the cup. It was often called Wycomico. After the downfall of the parish Mr. Joseph Ball placed this and other pieces into my hands for preservation, in the hope that the day might come when the old Lee and more modern Wycomico parish might call for it again." The cup is now in use in the old Wycomico church. He married (first) in 1675. Mary, the only daughter of Colonel William Kendall; and (second) Sarah , daughter of Colonel Isaac Allerton, of Westmoreland. Children: William, born prior to 1682, died young and without issue before 1706; Anna, prior to January 5, 1682, and was living as late as October 1754 married (first) William Armistead, and (second) William Eustace; Richard born August 18, 1691; (by the second marriage): Isaac, 1707, died in England in 1727; John, born probably in 1709, died August 11 1789; Hancock, mentioned below; Elizabeth, born 1711, married Zachary Taylor.

HON.HANCOCK LEE, (2--4), of "Ditchley," Northumberland Co., Va., b. 1650; d. 1709; fourth son of Col. Richard and Anna ---- Lee, of Northumberland Co., Va. He served as Justice of Northampton Co., 1677; moved to Northumberland Co., in 1688, and built the ancestral home of "Ditchley ;" was a liberal supporter of the Established Church. and gave a Communion Cup to Ditchley Parish in 1711. William, to whom his father willed his Maryland lands, served as a family business agent in Virginia as well as a justice and a captain in the militia. Like his father, he was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses. William caused some excitement when he left his entire estate to a young widow, Mary Heath, who after entering into the inheritance remarried, to one Bartholomew Schreever. William Lee’s estate returned to the family after Richard the Scholar convinced the Virginia courts that the Immigrant’s will had limited his legacies to William for the term of his life only.

U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 about William Lee Name: William Lee Gender: male Birth Year: 1650 Spouse Name: Alice ??? Marriage Year: 1675

From Ancestry: William C. Lee married Alice Felton, he is the son of Richard Henry Lee and Ann Constable.

Documentation from "Log Cabins to White House" by Brewer. On page 275 ": On 19 Jan 1668 William and wife Alice acknowledged debt of 250 acres of land to William Heath. On 5 Sep 1668 William and wife Alice sold their plantation to Thomas Adams (Surry Co. records p.54).

Research from Dr. James Lawler on William Lee son of Richard Henry Lee and Ann Constable: Edmund Jennings Lee had not found any record of what happened to one son William Lee and blew it off finally saying he appears to have died young. Well sort of. He did die earlier, 1694-5, than other siblings, leaving a 18 year old daughter and three younger minor sons. The daughter Mary had married William Heath at age 15 had two sons, Thomas and Samuel the last being born after his father died. She remarried to Bartholomew Schriever who when he was of age so grabbed the estate and paid out yearly a gentlemans living to the three boys; Wm, John, and Richard. What he paid was far less than the estate could manage; and they deserved more; but it was legally large enough that they could not sue their guardian until ALL of them were of age. The instant the youngest turned 21 they did sue. BUT not in probate court but common pleas court to recover their inheritance. And not in the original county (Westmoreland) but the county had been split and then re-split in the mean time (at this time it was Surry Co) and worse the judge (a VIP ) did not travel to them he stayed put and they had to come to him in King and Queen County.

Lee, son of Richard & Anne Constable Lee, was married ( spouse not identified) and had a daughter Mary Lee [see below**]. This fits with research that Ihave found which shows that William C. Lee married Alice Felton between 1672 & 1675. From this marriage came 8 children- one of whom is my ancestor Richard Lee 1677-1726. In some family histories there appears to be another child Micheal Lee born in 1747 however this would be after William's death in 1696 and Alice Felton's death in 1703 [Historical record of marriage exists] so this is questionable. From the Wikipedia page "Academic dictionaries & encylopedias: Richard Lee I is found:"#Capt. William Lee (1651-1696), married Alice Felton in 1675 and fathered four children by her." From my resarch using Ancestry.com resources, the children of William C. Lee are: Mary 1672-1731, Richard 1677 - 1726, John 1677-1731, William I 1682-1717. Jean Jane Lee 1682, Olivia 1682, Sarah 1688, Nancy 1690 do not appear to have survivied infancy. Michael 1747 (?). Research to continue.

Controversy regarding William Lee ? Married with Children that became Southern Georgia Branch or died unmarried & without Children

According th the Lee Family Digital Archive" " William (born c. 1651–c. 1697), who died without marrying. William Lee’s estate returned to the family after Richard the Scholar convinced the Virginia courts that the Immigrant’s will had limited his legacies to William for the term of his life only.Family Digital Archive, "

According to "Decendants of John Lee" - In 1988 William Thorndale (National Genealogical Society Quarterly, 76-4, pp253-267) established "beyonf question" the parentage of the emigrant COL Richard Lee and his subsequent off-spring, which indicates that William C.
