Silversmith and watchmaker

  Events in his life were:

  • Apprenticed in 1824 to Hiram Eaton in Saint Albans VT
  • He worked c 1830 as a silversmith and watchmaker in Bennington VT
  • He spent only a short time working as a journeyman before enrolling at Phillips Academy and later Dartmouth College to study theology. He graduated in 1839 and continued his studies at the Union Theological Seminary, graduating in 1843. During this time he continued his trade, working as an itinerant smith and watchmaker. He formally took up the pulpit in 1849 at Palmyra NY.
