At the age of 23 Hugh George Hammond Ross married Gertrude Greenaway at her parents residence in Woodville. They had a daughter Gladys Ross. Sometime between 1895-1899 Hugh and Gertrude were divorced and during this upheaval Hugh George Hammond Ross dropped the surname Ross from his name and used his third christian name, Hammond, as his surname (his mothers maiden name). Hugh married a second time to Evelyn Flutey of Otaki using the surname Hammond and they were known as George and Evelyn Hammond. George Hammond ran a butchery at Temuka and they are buried in Temuka cemetery. There was one daughter from his second marriage, Florence Evelyn Hammond.
