About Hurshell Thomas Freeman
Andy McMahan writes:
I spoke with my grandmother (Bernice Freeman Andrews) on August 29, 2011 with regard to Hershell "Tom" Freeman. Here are a few things that she remembered about Hurshell Thomas Freeman.
- He was a police officer in Bryson City, North Carolina. She said that she remembered that he was one of the first police officers to take classes regarding "finger printing". She didn't recall anything else about it and wasn't sure if anything came of it.
- He was a cook in the military (that's the origination of the photo.) [Note: I think she said 'Army', but that could have been a generic term. Regardless, I'm sure it was the military.]
- He had Tuberculosis. She remembers that he went to a special place in Colorado where they removed one of his lungs. He said he did very well there "because of the good air". She said it was when he returned to Bryson City that he became a police officer.
Bernice did not recall that Tom smoked, so she was surprised when I said that the death certificate indicated lung cancer.
Another interesting note: It appears as though the Freemans were convinced that 'good air' was vital to TB recovery (see Tom's brother, Charlie Freeman's 'about me' section.)
