Ira Eldredge was the eldest son of Alanson and Esther Sunderlin Eldredge. Ira married Nancy Black 4 July 1833 and they had 11 children, 9 of which grew to adulthood. Ira was converted to the LDS Chruch in 1840 by John Page and Orson Pratt when on their way to Jerusalem. Ira left his home in Indiana in April of 1846 for the Rocky Mountains. After arriving in and abandoned Nauvoo in 1846 the family continued to Winter Quarters and then on to the Salt Lake Valley arriving in September of 1847. Ira helped lead 3 pioneer compaines across the plains including his own in 1847 then one in 1854 and again in 1861.
