His son, E. Burton Holmes, wrote in 1953: "Ira was brilliant, aggressive, always over-working himself in an effort to avoid work. He was a born gambler, playing always for the highest stakes -- in business, in real estate speculations, or on the Board of Trade. Once, he pyramided a tiny capital of $250 into a fortune, on paper of more than $800,000. In reaching for the apex of a million, he lost it all, and with it the major portion of my mother's undivided interest in the Burton fortune, which at one time was worth several million dollars in Chicago real estate. How happy I am not to be loaded today with corner lots and buildings in the Loop!"
