First born son of Abraham, from his concubine Hagar.
Both Jewish and Islamic traditions consider Ishmael as the ancestor of northern Arab people. Islamic tradition, however, has a very positive view of Ishmael, giving him a larger and more significant role. The Qur'an views him as an Islamic prophet. The story of Abraham being commanded to bring his son as a sacrifice is also told in the Quran, without mentioning the son's name. According to the contextual interpretation of some early Islamic theologians whose view prevailed later, Ishmael was the actual son that Abraham was called on to sacrifice, as opposed to Isaac. According to the Genesis account, Ishmael and his mother were expelled at the instigation of Sarah, in order to make sure that Isaac would be Abraham's heir. Abraham and Ishmael are said to have built the foundations of the Kaaba. The circumcision of Muslims has its roots in the tradition that Ishmael was circumcised. -------------------- Ishmael is mentioned in the Bible Genesis 16:11; 16:15; 16:16; 17:18; 17:20; 17:23; 17:25; 17:26; 25:9; 25:12; 25:13; 25:16; 25:17; 28:9; 36:3 1 Chronicles 1:28; 1:29; 1:31 -------------------- lived 137 years.
"And the Angel of the LORD said to her: 'Behold, you are with child, And you shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael (lit. "God hears"), Because the LORD has heard your affliction. He shall be a wild man; His hand shall be against every man, And every man's hand against him. And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.'" Genesis 16:11-12
"So Hagar bore Abram (Abraham) a son; and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram." Genesis 16:15-16 -------------------- Genesis 25:12-16 -------------------- Verse(s), from the Bible, that refer to Ishmael:
Genesis 16:1
[ Hagar and Ishmael ] Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar;
Genesis 16:11
The angel of the LORD also said to her: “You are now pregnant and you will give birth to a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard of your misery.

Genesis 17:20
And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation.
Genesis 17:23
On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household or bought with his money, every male in his household, and circumcised them, as God told him.
Genesis 17:25
and his son Ishmael was thirteen;
Genesis 17:26
Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on that very day.
Genesis 21:8
[ Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away ] The child grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast.
Verse(s), from the Book of Jubilees, that refer to Ishmael:
21. And Abram rejoiced, and made all these things known to Sarai his wife; and he believed that he would have seed, but she did not bear. 22. And Sarai advised her husband Abram, and said unto him: "Go in unto Hagar, my Egyptian maid: it may be that I shall build up seed unto thee by her." 23. And Abram hearkened unto the voice of Sarai his wife, and said unto her, "Do (so)." And Sarai took Hagar, her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to Abram, her husband, to be his wife. 24. And he went in unto her, and she conceived and bare him a son, and he called his name Ishmael, in the fifth year of this week; and this was the eighty-sixth year in the life of Abram. (c. 1920-1783)
