Ante went to work in the gumfields of Northland, NZ. he suffered a serious accident by falling beneath a train and losing half of his right leg. He became known as Shevo(Lame one) He trained as a boot repairer and for many years had a business on the corner of Victoria and Albert Streets in Auckland. It was here that friends and relatives congregated. he was a keen follower of Rugby League in Carlaw Park.
