James Denyer, son of Thomas Denyer and Ann Saunders, was christened on 19 Dec

1784 in Ash, Surrey.

General Notes: James and his family were regular recipients of charity from the Parish:

At Christmas 1841 they were recipients of the Homefield Bread, described in the Parish

Register as "given the Sunday after Xmas in 40 sixpenny loaves which are paid for by the

Rector of Ash as a charge upon part of the Glebe". Other recipients in 1841 included John

Denyer and Stephen Denyer.

In 1841 they were also recipients of the Smith Benefaction described as follows "The Smith

Benefaction for 1841 amounting to £16.0.0 was given away in Bread on Sunday 20th March

and 3rd April by the Minr and Ch-Wardens to 79 poor families. Total number of loaves 375".

The table of recipients includes the following entries:

In 1835, 5 loaves were given to James, 2 to John Denyer;

in 1834, 4 loaves were given to James;

The Smith Benefaction is detailed earlier in the same Parish Register:

"Henry Smith Esq - 1712 - Will - To the Poor, and Apprenticing Children - £5.8.4"

"Smiths Money is due at Mich and usually exceeds ten pounds. It is pd at Messrs Bray &

Warren's Office at 57 Gt Russell St Bloomsbury and has been received by Messrs Knight,

Banker Farnham on their being furnished by me with the printed order and receipt for the

money signed by myself and the Ch-Wardens. The Money has been laid out in Bread and

distributed to the Poor on the two Sundays on Acct of the large quantity

Noted events in his life were:

• He worked as a labourer in 1813 in Ash, Surrey.7 He is described as a labourer in all the

Baptism entries for his children"
