Hukkus jäämurdjal “Merikaru” 19.augustil 1941.a. Väinameres. “Merikaru” uputas Saksa torpeedokaater S 58. Perished on the ice-breaker “Merikaru” (sea bear) 19th Aug 1941 in the Vaina see. Merikaru was sunk by a German torpedo ship (S 58). (hpk)

from document issued by Criminal Police Chief, Haapsalu, Dec 13, 1941 to Jaan's widow: (translated from Estonian into English) "... the icebreaker “merikaru” (bear of the sea) perished because of either a mine or torpedo explosion last August 19th, 1941 in the Muhu channel near the island of Kumari - together with all the ship’s crew. Later, the icebreaker Merickar’s captain Robert Konga was recovered near “Rukkirahu” island; in his coat pocket they found the ship’s crew list, from which was discovered that Jaan Usin served on the ship as a helmsman. Jaan Usin’s corpse has not been found to date... (hpk)
