About Jacob Andries Louis Montgomery, b9

Voorgeskiedenis en Geskiedenis Nederduitsch Hervormde Gemeente Zeerust by Herman Rex 1971

Jacob Andries Louis Montgomery, who had the honour of being elected as the first magistrate of Zeerust, was born in January 1835 in Smith River in the district of Cradock as the son of John Montgomery and Susanna Jacoba van Zyl. It is not certain what year the Montgomery family settled in Marico. The first time that he made an appearance was in September 1869 when he, in his role as resident “veldkornet” again made an application to the State President to appoint a Commissioner of Justice in or nearby the town of Zeerust. He then lived on the farm Uitkyk where he made a living as a farmer. In 1871 and the year after, he was member of the “Volksraad” [House of Assembly] of Potchefstroom. Apparently after his appointment as a member of the “Volksraad” [House of Assembly] he still lived on his farm because he died there on 2 May 1873 at the young age of 38 years 4 months and 8 days. He named his portion of Uitkyk “Montgomery’s Hope”. Magistrate Montgomery died shortly after his resignation as member of the “Volksraad” [House of Assembly] and in the first year of his magistrate appointment. At the time of his death, his only son, John Henry, was already an adult, but his only daughter, Johanna Maria, was not yet an adult. He was married to Elsje Susanna Robberts. From the valuation on his estate by John E. Hutton and D.J. Coetzee it appears that he was the owner of a farm in Lydenburg, had a citizenship, owned a few plots in Zeerust as well as a portion of the farm “de eerst Uitkyk” [The First Uitkyk]. His son, John Henry Montgomery, who was born in 1844, was married to Maria Isabella Coetzee, ‘n daughter of Diederik Coetzee. At his death in the Johannesburg Hospital on 15 August 1914 he lived at Newlands, Johannesburg and his profession was “general prospector
