Jacob Salomon Herselman (Hesselman) was born about 1850 in Humansdorp, Cape, South Africa. His parents were Jacob Solomon Hesselman and Frederika Theunissina de Vos. He died of dysentery and complications on 19th May 1895 not long after getting to Southern Rhodesia, and only 3 weeks after his wife Susannah Gertruida also died of sysentery..

There were 4 minor children who had travelled with the couple on the Trek in 1894, ages ranging from 6 to 16 at the time.

On Jacob's ZIM DN 2/102 there is a note that says -

  • 18/8/1896 G B Dunbar Moodie app. Tutor Dative
  • 18/10/1900 Jan N Moolman appointed Tutor Dative.
