The marriage record is taken from the personal records kept by Rev. Malachi Cooper of Pulaski County; James appears in Cooper's list as James Gastin, which could be taken as evidence that "Gastineau" was sometimes recorded as Gaskin or Gaskins. [See below, under George Gastineau.]

Usrey, Martin T. Walker. [This is from the abstract; the original will appears to be missing.] The will was probated 16 April 1880 Greene County, Indiana [Greene County, Indiana, Probate order books, Book 12, p. 483): 23rd day March term 1880 / April 16, 1880.

Comes now Daniel H. Fields one of the Executors named in the last Will and Testamednt of James Gastineau, deceased, and files his petition for letters testamentary. Wherefore it is ordered by the Court that said Daniel H. Fields as Executor execute and file his bond as such in the penalty of Eight Thousand dollars ($8000.00) with surety to the approval of the Court which bond is now filed by said Executor in the penalty aforesaid withSamuel S. Sharp, Joseph W. Visey[?], Thomas Rigely, and David Lynn as sureties and is by the Court approved. Children of James3 Gastineau and Patience Morrow (see #5), all born in Greene County, Indiana, were as follows:

  i. Nancy J.2 Gastineau; born 1822-1826?; married 1st William L. Wakefield 2 September 1858 in Greene County, Indiana (his 2nd wife) [Greene County, Indiana, Marriage records, Book F, p. 422); married 2nd Daniel H. Fields 1885? in Greene County, Indiana (his 2nd wife].
  ii. Andrew Jackson Gastineau; born 1823? In the 1870 census, he was living with his sister, Margaret.

  iii. Elizabeth Gastineau; born 1827; married George Dye 19 October 1849 in Kentucky (his 1st wife) [Greene County, Indiana, Marriage records, Book E, p. 64].
  iv. Adam Gastineau; born 14 February 1830; married Elizabeth Nantz 26 September 1850 in Greene County, Indiana [Greene County, Indiana, Marriage records, Book E, p. 206); died 1 December 1864 at near Linton, Greene County, Indiana. He moved to Shelby County, Illinois, between 1853 and 1857.

Adam enlisted 15 August 1862 in the Shelbyville Volunteers, which became Company D, 35th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded in the face and neck at Chickamauga; he went home on furlough to recover and died of smallpox while visiting his parents. (A bit of irony there. . . .)

  v. Mary H. Gastineau; born September 1832; married James Brice Baughn 13 September 1855 in Greene County, Indiana (his 2nd wife) [Greene County, Indiana, Marriage records, Book F, p. 119); died 25 May 1875 at Pawnee City, Pawnee County, Nebraska.

  • 6. Levi Gastineau was "a pioneer farmer, having spent all his mature years on a farm. He found farm work a pleasure" [Biographical Memoirs of Greene County, Indiana (Indianapolis: B. F. Bowen, 1908), p. 1172]. He was born 10 January 1833 Greene County, Indiana. He married Rachel Hatfield, daughter of George Washington Hatfield & Elizabeth Snyder, 20 November 1851 Greene County, Indiana [Greene County, Indiana, Marriage Records, Book E, p. 287] (as her 1st husband).

Fields one of the Executors named in the last Will and Testamednt of James Gastineau, deceased, and files his petition for letters testamentary. Wherefore it is ordered by the Court that said Daniel H. It took close to ten years to settle estate and in estate papers names all children and children of deceased children. In this dau. Elizabeth Gastineau Dye is listed as such and Robert Thomas McKee sighned on behalf of his wife to get her inheritance.
