Taranaki Herald 13 October 1902 MR JAMES ALLAN. The . mortal remains of Mr James Allan, an old Taranaki settler, 'were interred _in the Te Henui Cemetery on Saturday. There was a substansial gathering of settlers at the funeral the service being conducted 'by, the Rev. S. J. Serpell. The deceased gentleman was one of the earlysettlers having arrived here in the Oriental??? early in 1842. One of the, missions the deceased was in -carrying despatches over, land .to Wellington, a journey-that occupied over a week. He returned with Mr 0. J Carrington, the surveyor, the trip being done on foot. .-Subsequently followed- the seafaring- proffession, and during this time was coxswain on the Government surfboat service. , He next followed his trade as a carpenter, and waa engaged in .it till he met with an accident . some 3 years ago which, necessitated his retirement from an active life. ' The deceased gentleman leaves a widow, five sons and five daughters.
