James Bland was born on June 16, 1844 in Bulloch County, Georgia, son of Daniel and Jincy (Parrish) Bland. He is brother to William H (1842); Elizabeth "Lizzie" (1846); Mikel (1848); Malachi (1850); Mitchell (1853); Benjamin "Ben" (1855) and Newton (1856) Bland.

James was a confederate veteran, farmer and a mason (Masonic symbol on his gravestone).

James was married twice. In 1864, he married Rebecca E. Bowen. James & Rebecca were the parents of McCrone "M. G." (1866); William "W.B." Bird (1868); Macy Ann (1870); Susan L (1872); Jincy (1875); Daniel "Donnie" B (1877); Lawrence Allen (1879); Aden B. (1881); Elliot B (1883) and Lilly (1885) Bland. In 1891, his wife, Rebecca, passed away.

On Dec 19, 1894, James married his second wife, Ella Jane Butler, in Bryan County, GA. James & Ella were the parents of James, Jr. (1903); Gibsey (1906) and Kidron (1896) Bland.

On July 19, 1925, James Bland, age 81 of Brooklet, Bulloch County, GA, died of heart failure. Informant was his nephew, Glenn Bland, of Statesboro, GA. Arrangements were with undertaker S. L. Terry of Statesboro. He was buried in Brooklet Cemetery.
