James Drake marries Sidney Reden Ray

James was born in 1835 in Pike Co., Georgia. Sidney Reden Ray was born in June 1837 in Fayette Co., Alabama. James and Sidney left Mississippi, following their marriage on January 8, 1857 in Fulton, Itawamba, Mississippi, and went to Arkansas. On August 13, 1858, James filed for a federal homestead on property in Sebastian County. He paid $10.00 for 80 acres which comes out to cost 12 1/2 cents per acre. He set about clearing the property which was covered in brush and small trees. He had managed to clear less than an acre before he left his home to enlist in the Civil War. Sidney had given birth to three children, and their birthplace is listed as Fort Smith Barracks, showing that Fort Smith was still primarily an Army post and not a town. James died as a POW in Illinois and Sidney took the children and went to Texas to join her family. It is unknown what happened to the homestead. She was obligated to put her children in an orphanage because she was unable to support them. The children were worked hard and poorly fed and finally their grandfather, John Ray, took them into his household. Sidney lived in Wise County with her parents and two of her sisters and their famillies. Sidney married two more times. Her marriage to Claborne Worsham was brief. The family story says that he was a wife beater. Her third marriage was to a widowed man, Doctor Harvey Jamison. Apparently, Harvey was a very good man and treated Sidney's family and children in a kindly way. They were married on July 30, 1887 in Wise County, Texas, but their marriage lasted only five years because Dr. Jamison died on January 29, 1892. Sidney died in Markley, Texas where she was living with her daughter, Mary and her son-in-law, John Calvin Sensibaugh. John built a wooden box for a casket, put it in his wagon, and drove Sidney to Decatur, Texas. She was buried in the Pleasant Grove #1 Cemetery alongside of her father, John Ray died at age 84 and her mother, Mary Taylor Ray died at age 86.

James and Sidney's children were Charles Wesley, Mary Penina (Mollie) and William Henry Drake.

James died in January 1864 in Rock Island Civil War Prison, Illinois. Sidney Reden Ray Drake died in May 1906 in Wise Co., Texas.
