I have looked up the word, "ensign" and discovered that, although it is the lowest ranked officer in the US navy, in England it was the Ensign who carried the flag. This is an abbreviated definition. We don't know if a snow-shoe officer carried the flag. Gratefully, Ellie Pelcyger
