The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the
to Major James Coey, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 6 February 1865, while serving with 147th New York Infantry, in action at Hatcher's Run, Virginia. Major Coey seized the regimental colors at a critical moment and by a prompt advance on the enemy caused the entire brigade to follow him; and, after being himself severely wounded, he caused himself to be lifted into the saddle and a second time rallied the line in an attempt to check the enemy.
