James Duane was an American lawyer, jurist, and Revolutionary leader from New York. He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress, New York state senator, Mayor of New York. President George Washington appointed him as the first U.S. District Judge of New York, and James Duane was a signor of the Articles of Confederation.
