His grave was moved in 1861 from the Fanning Family Cemetery by George Hill, to the Riverhead Cemetery, Riverhead, Suffolk, New York, on Long Island. A Lengthy inscription on the stone gives a family history. A portion of thet inscription begins; "Capt. James Fanning died in 1776*, in the 93 year of his age, He was the great grand son of Dominicus Fanning, who was Mayor of a city in Ireland (under Charles I) and was taken prisoner at the battle of DROGHEDA in 1649, all the Garrison, except himself put to the sword. He was beheaded by CROMWELL, his head stuck upon a pole at the principal gate of the city, his property confiscated..... ". *Although his stone says he died in 1776, the correct death year is 1779. See Find-A-Grave memorial # 54956810 for more info and family links. There are 41 additional Fanning Family headstones at the Riverhead Cemetery in Suffolk.
