He was a Lieutenant in Bowker's Rovers in the Gaeleka War in 1878, Captain in the Yomanry in the Basuto War and Sergeant Major in the the Somerset East DMT during Anglo Boer War.

He and Josie did not have any children.

James Frederick Fleischer Bowker (Fred) was the fourth child and eldest son of Robert Mitford Bowker and Sarah Elizabeth Hart. Robert Mitford Bowker was the 6th son of Miles Bowker and Anna Maria Mitford. One of Fred's younger brothers was Oliver Osbaldiston Bowker.

Fred Married Josephine Mary Smuts and they had no children. Josephine's parents were Dr. Johannes Smuts and Susan Margaret Ferris only daughter of Captain Grindley Ferris of the 24th Warwickshire Regiment.

Josephine's brother, Johannes Joachim Lodewyk Smuts married Ester Wilhelmina Eleonora Morkel and their eldest daughter, Susan Margaret married Oliver Osbaldiston Bowker. Fred lived at Charlton and also at 'The Retreat' (part of 'Glen Avon') and afterwards in

Somerset East. He was scab inspector for many years.
